Chateau Guery L’Esprit d’Eloi Petite Verdot 2018

If you are fed up with wimpy, wishy washy Reds that claim to be delicate in order to hide their lack of lack of structure then you are going to be all sorts of happy when you get some Petite Verdot in your glass. PV’s calling card is bold tannin and the 2018 L’Esprit d’Eloi has tannin in abundance. The wine may not be hard but it is certainly firm. As the evidence of tannin fades you’ll begin to see why we love this wine so darn much. It is imbued with the most extravagant core of dark berry fruit with sultry flavors of cassis liqueur and sun baked plums leading the charge. As it progresses onto the finish wonderfully dark flavors of crushed blackberries and blackcurrant preserves take hold. It finishes with an untamed character that is iron rich and sanguine showing remarkable evidence of terroir in spite of the intensity of fruit that it delivers. It is a fantastic choice for serving with wild game and will play very nicely with braises, roasts, and stews. This bottle is ridiculously good to drink now and it will be even better in 3 or 4 years as the tannins more fully integrate and the fruit fades a bit in order to allow the sanguine minerality to take center stage.
Food Pairing:
The last time I served a bottle of the Chateau Guery Petite Verdot I put it alongside a course of sous vide cooked lamb t-bones that I seasoned simply with salt and pepper and finished on a screaming hot grill with a kiss of one of my favorite sauces, a warm mix of half hoisin sauce and half cherry preserves. The wine stood up to those intense flavors with no trouble and left everyone at the table smiling as we polished off the first bottle and went on to a second!

Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel 2018

If there is a producer with a better track record for making kick a$$ Zinfandel than Seghesio then we haven’t heard of them! Vintage after vintage, Seghesio cooks up a fantastic assortment of Zins starting with their iconic Sonoma County bottling. The 90 Point 2018 Sonoma County Zin is an explosive example of the best of what California has to offer. One quick swirl and sniff is all it takes to create a visceral, pulse quickening response. A bounty of mid-summer flowers is entangled with darker notes of warm brown sugar and ground Ceylon cinnamon, each becoming more pronounced with each passing swirl. The palate is every bit as striking as the nose with the kind of rowdy fruit and spice that’ll get you hooting and hollering if you aren’t careful with it! The entry has a rather sanguine feel to it with concentrated flavors of raspberry puree and tart red cherries sitting triumphantly astride blood orange liqueur, fraise liqueur, cracked pepper, and grated ginger. Every sip has an electricity to it that makes me excited for the next one. Drinking it generates the sort of excited momentum that eventually ends in a crescendo when you pair this beauty with a succulent slow smoked baby back rib or a piece of ooey gooey New York style pepperoni pizza.
Food Pairing:
I love the way a nice plump Zinfandel like the 2018 Sonoma County Zin from Seghesio pairs up with tomato sauce. Whether it’s a skim coat on a super thin Neapolitan pizza or a thick layer between sheets of pasta in a lasagna your mouth is going to thank you for the hookup!
