Domaine Soleyrade has quickly become our favorite producer of inexpensive Cotes du Rhone. The winery recently received their Organic Certification and we think that the juice they’re putting out now is even better than ever. Their 2015 Cotes du Rhone is a perfect example of premium French table wine. The nose offers up an alluring perfume of blueberry jam, mocha, tar, leather, and incense. It is the sort of nose that you just don’t find in either dollar wines. But the quality doesn’t end there. The palate is right on point too, offering excellent richness and wonderful layers of ripe red cherries, raspberry cordial, kirsch liqueur, and toasted graham crackers. It finishes with classic Southern Rhone panache delivering layers of underbrush, mocha, cinnamon, iron-rich soil, and pipe tobacco. We taste a heck of a lot of wine every week here at the shop so you can take our word for it when we say that you simply do not get this level of quality, interest, or style from such an inexpensive red. As good as the wine is today, and it’s real good, it is on the evolutionary upswing and should mature nicely in bottle for another year or 18 months. Did we mention that it’s only eight freaking bucks?!? Buy this one up, folks!
Food Pairing:
The 2015 Domaine Soleyrade Cotes du Rhone is the kind of wine that I like to say would be delicious when paired with the spare tire of the car. It has been our house red all summer summer and we drink it unapologetically out of used jelly jars. We pair it with everything from burgers to pizza to plain old cheese and crusty bread. That said, my favorite use for it is chef fuel. I love to have a glass (or three) while I’m cooking and tasting different ingredients and sauces. It’s a perfect little house red that you will find yourself reaching for over and over again because it is so darn good to sip.
