Terra d’oro Amador County Zinfandel 2012

Spring is fast approaching here in the Mile High City. So this week we have a fantastic value on a perfect Red for the impending grilling and chilling season. The 2012 Terra d’oro Amador County Zinfandel is jam packed with ripe, spicy Zin character. The nose is awash with sultry scents of toasty oak, fresh baked cherry pie, and the unmistakable scent of roses just plucked from the bush on a warm summer evening. On the palate you’ll find a flawless example of a wine that is fruity but not sweet. Ripe raspberries, blackberries, and red currants bathe the inside of your mouth with a soft glow of juicy goodness. Then, in classic Zin fashion, the finish offers up a generous mix of clove, candied orange zest, sweet vanilla, and brambly underbrush. Despite the wine’s boozy appearance, it lists 14.5% alcohol on the label, this rich red never feels hot. Instead, from start to finish, it delivers the kind of pleasure that we are always seeking out in the wines we offer you on this email. Grab as many bottles of this juicy 90 Point gem as you can this weekend and crack one any time you want something juicy, fruity, spicy, and delicious!
On to the Tasting Notes:
There are times when I want to open something profound and then there are other times when I want to open something delicious. This week’s special, the 2012 Terra d’oro Amador County Zinfandel, is a perfect example of the sort of wine that I could open when I want something straight up yummy! What could be more hedonistic and frivolous on a Thursday night than ordering a pizza and cracking a bottle of Zin?

I opened a bottle of the 2012 Terra d’oro Zinfandel and poured myself a nice large tasting glass. I gave it a quick sniff to check for flaws and, finding none, I left it to breathe for about an hour before sitting down to write this review. In classic Zinfandel fashion the nose exploded out of the glass to greet me when I returned to it. Wonderful scents of fresh picked raspberries, toasty oak, vanilla, and rose petals lept out of the glass to greet me. Then, on the palate, I got a whole host of lush berry flavors that ranged from blackberries and black currants at first to crushed raspberries and candied cherries later. The finish was smooth and ripe with hints of spice coming in the form of clove, cinnamon, and vanilla as well as that great Zinfandel underbrush and bramble. It was warm and ripe without being hot or sweet. All in all it came across as being a really classically built bottle of Amador Zin with the sort of sort of concentration that drank more like a $20 bottle.
Food Pairing:
I sure do love the way that a nice juicy California Zinfandel pairs up with a slice of pizza. But it’s also a great companion for anything you could cook on the grill or the smoker. Try this one out sometime with some applewood smoked chicken thighs that you brined in brown sugar and salt then rubbed down with garam masala if you really want to kick things up a notch.
