Highflyer Star Lane Vineyard Syrah 2007

Ready? Set. Go! This weekend we have something special for you. The 2007 Highflyer Star Lane Vineyard Syrah is simply magnificent. Massive and unrestrained, it offers the collector a spectacular glimpse into the warm days and cool nights that the Star Lane Vineyard experienced during the summer of 2007. After an hour or so in the decanter dark and brooding aromas of wilted violets, vanilla, dark chocolate, and freshly cold espresso reach right out of the glass and lure you in for that first sip. This Syrah delivers a complete flavor explosion on the palate. The first sip is so brash and bold that it’s difficult to get your bearings. But a second sip begins to bring the wine into focus revealing flavors of roasted plums, blackberry jam, cassis liqueur, and vine ripened black currants. Ripe fruit tannin frames the otherwise sultry finish and lends some definition to this brooding behemouth. Hints of caramel, toasty oak, and peppery spice seem to touch every nook and cranny of the palate as the finish lingers into eternity. So yeah, it’s pretty tasty stuff. Invest in 6 of these and drink one a year until they’re gone. You can thank us later…
On to the Tasting Notes:
I’ve said on a number of occasions that Syrah is one of the most rewarding varietals to cellar. It changes and develops over the months and years taking on more and more character and complexity during its maturation. This week we have the pleasure of offering you a very well made single vineyard Syrah from our friends at the Highflyer Winery. This brooding beast registers the best part of 16% alcohol and comes in a bottle with a punt so deep that you could get lost in it without a flashlight. The nose is awash in sultry scents of vanilla, incense, cigar box, and blackberry preserves boiling away on the stove on a warm late summer evening. As the wine opens up and develops in the glass the nose slowly evolves giving up even more layered complexity with dynamic hints of marzipan, violets, and grilled bread. The palate is a veritable flavor explosion with powerful notes of blackberry jam, chocolate covered cherries, and roasted plums up front. As the wine moves towards the back and sides of the palate notes of ripe blueberries, cinnamon, anise, game, and tar all drift slowly into and out of focus. A touch of ripe tannin serves to ground this otherwise unrestrained red giving it a sense of not quite composure, but definition. One can only guess at how this bottle will mature but I suspect that it will be totally worth watching for the next 5 to 7 years. I’m going to grab a half case, despite not needing any more wine in my basement, because I simply cannot resist having the opportunity to follow it for a while.
Food Pairing:
If there was ever a better bottle of wine for pairing with a big plate of braised shortribs then I haven’t tasted it. The sides are up to you on this one but whatever you do you’re welcome to go big with it. Blue cheese and rosemary studded grits comes to this Southern boy’s mind but I think you could certainly do a hearty warm barley salad crispy fried brussels sprout leaves or even a good ole loaded baked potato.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
This price expires 3/8/2015 at 6pm and is limited to in-store quantities.
