Cubo Seleccion Tempranillo 2011

Okay folks, this week we have concrete evidence that the days of the 90 Point $9.99 wines are not a thing of the past. If you’ve been reading this email for a few years then you undoubtedly remember the fantastic 2009 Cubo Seleccion Tempranillo. But if you’re a newer reader then let us take a moment to tell you just how darn good the 2011 Cubo is drinking. This wildly ripe and rich Tempranillo hails from the Spanish region of La Mancha. The nose explodes out of the glass with sultry scents of aged tobacco, wilted violets, and baked plums. As you would expect with a nose like that, that palate is thoroughly rich and ripe. It delivers abundant notes of black cherry preserves, French cassis liqueur, and ripe black currants. The finish is plush and creamy, even showing a kiss of that great old-vine minerality. You won’t find any aggressive tannins or hard edges here. From start to finish the 2011 Cubo is all about pleasure!
On to the Tasting Notes:
Picture yourself sitting in front of a nice warm fire this weekend. On the hearth in front of you there’s a bottle of the delicious 2011 Cubo Seleccion Tempranillo and a plate of assorted cured meats and cheeses. Maybe you’re solo. Maybe you’ve got a special friend, or two if you’re into that, by your side. At that point it’s all about pleasure and you want a wine that is going to make you smile. Well, let me tell you, Cubo is just such a wine. The nose is awash with scents of ripe fruit initially. Then as you swirl and sniff you’ll get past all that fruit and find layers of cigar box, toasty oak, and violet liqueur. If you weren’t totally sold after just smelling this one then you will be once you taste it. The palate is thoroughly ripe and full. It bursts with fruit delivering plenty of blackberry, black currant, and roasted plum. The finish even offers a touch of blueberry pie filling at first. Then hints of liquified minerals, cedar, vanilla, and toasty oak take hold. The tannins, while present, are very controlled and mild and the acidity is somewhat so as well which makes this one an ideal candidate for casual sipping when you’re in the mood for something luscious and pleasant.
Food Pairing:
Like I said earlier, you’ll love the Cubo all by itself since it has such a pleasant and rounded profile. But if you want to do a little pairing then try this one out with a pork tenderloin that you pounded thin and then layered with capicola and gorgonzola then rolled up into a roulade and tied with butchers twine. Rub the outside with crushed aleppo pepper flakes and dried thyme then sear the whole thing off in a large skillet and then gently finish it in the oven. Let it rest for a few minutes and then slice it into ½” rounds and serve it atop a bed of broccoli rabe sauteed with toasted garlic, fresh thyme, and a bit more aleppo pepper flake.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
