Artisanal Wine Cellars Adams Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009

Simply put, this is no more perfect companion for a traditional Thanksgiving meal than a beautifully aged single vineyard Oregon Pinot Noir. This week we have just such a wine and, in classic “Wine of the Week” fashion, it’s highly rated, deeply discounted, and bursting with character. Artisanal Cellars only made 150 cases of their Adams Vineyard Pinot Noir in 2009 and we managed to snag all that they had remaining at the winery. Upon opening the bottle and pouring a glass engaging aromas of crushed cherries, cedar, violets, pipe tobacco all begin to gently unfold with each passing swirl and sniff. One sip of this poised and polished red relates a story that take hours to tell using mere words. Dried cherries and sweet raspberry preserves dance on the entry while vibrant acidity provides exceptional definition on the long, mineral laden finish. Mouth-watering and succulent, this striking 2009 wants nothing more than someone to love it.
On to the Tasting Notes:
We’ve had the pleasure of offering you a few great wines from Artisanal Cellars over the years. So I can’t tell you how excited I was to hear that we were going to be able to get our hands on the last of their gorgeous 2009 Adams Vineyard Pinot Noir. We’re going to serve a variety of great wines next Thursday and I can assure you that this Pinot is going to be a huge hit at our table.

It seems to be a perfect stage of evolution with such impressive poise and balance coming from fantastic fruit sourcing and real non-interventionist winemaking practices in the cellar. The nose delivers the kind of layered complexity that winemakers all over the world strive to produce in their top wines. The top note is clearly dominated by ripe red fruit but as you dig deeper you’ll start to get scents of fresh flowers like rose and violet. Then hints of cigar box, cinnamon, and damp forest floor all begin to make appearances. If the nose sets the stage for the palate then, let me tell you, this is one well set stage! Once you go in for a sip the palate most certainly does not disappoint. It begins on the entry with ripe red currants and creamy raspberries. The mid-palate has certain sense of tension between the lovely fruit on the entry and the vibrant acidity on the finish. I love it when a wine has that tension because it always makes me think more deeply about it and it makes each passing sip more interesting than the one that preceded it. The finish bursts with warm baking spice, fresh pie crust, mineral laden soil, and even a touch of bacon fat which serves to further reinforce the give and take relationship between fruit and umami in this elegant red.
Food Pairing:
As I already mentioned, I believe that the 2009 Artisanal Adams Vineyard Pinot will provide a perfect companion for your lovingly prepared Thanksgiving Day meal. But this is no one trick pony. Cellar it for another 5 years and watch it evolve over that span pairing it the whole while with broiled salmon, lean beef tenderloin, and seared duck breast. I have no doubt that it will deliver true pleasure in all of those contexts.
