Valle Las Acequias Malbec 2010

What's not to love about a big rich Argentine Malbec at fantastic price? This week we have a delicious offering for you from a very well respected producer, Luis Segundo Correas. The 2010 Las Acequias Malbec is sourced from an 85 year old vineyard in the famous Mendoza growing region. Quality is evident in every facet of this wine's personality. The nose is lush and refined with a certain amount of subtlety at first. A few minutes of decanting coaxes hints of freshly baked cookies and sweet violets out of their slumber. Further swirling and sniffing reveals vanilla, espresso, and plenty of ripe berry fruit. The palate is dense without being insincere. It offers a generously fruited entry replete with black currant, plum, and sweet black cherries. A clean and composed finish flows seamlessly from the entry and offers wine lovers a glimpse into the truly special terroir that Mendoza has become so famous for. Fine tannins linger on the finish and serve as a frame for the ripe fruit, vanilla, and mineral that this lovely red puts on display. Be warned though, this Malbec is in short supply and most likely will not last through the weekend. So if you’re a Malbec lover you are going to want to phone in your order now so that you don’t miss out.
On to the Tasting Notes:
Sometimes Malbec can be a little silly. Producers often manipulate their wines in order to produce styles that are ripe and appealing to novice wine drinkers at the expense of real quality. So it’s great when you run across an old line producer who is growing great grapes and then making quality wine without all the trickery. The 2010 Las Acequias Malbec from Luis Segundo Correas is just such a wine. Excellent stewardship of their estate vineyards creates ideal conditions for growing Malbec grapes. As soon as you pull the cork and pour a glass you’ll notice the elegant blue-black color in the glass. Saturated without being completely opaque, it appears to be good honest Malbec. A quick sniff confirms that supposition. Delicate hints of freshly brewed coffee, soft vanilla, violets, and vine-ripened berries all seem to make appearances without any of them dominating the nose. The entry continues along those same lines with beautiful ripe plum, blackberry, and cherry flavors initially. Then as the wine makes its way to the back of the palate appealing hints of toasty oak, wood smoke, liquified minerals, and glove leather drift in and out of focus. While the finish is certainly not tart, the Las Acequias Malbec does offer just enough acidity to make it food friendly. And you’ll even notice a touch of fine grained tannins lingering after you swallow. It is a surprisingly complete wine with a style that should work very nicely for pairing with hearty meals today and it may be a good candidate for 3 to 5 years of cellaring if you’re a fan of more restrained South American reds.
Food Pairing:
I love Savory Spice Shop. So I often head over to the location in my neighborhood for inspiration. One of my favorite finds of theirs is the Mexican Mole powder. Mix it up according to their website directions and then use it to slowly simmer some bone-in chicken thighs. Once they’re all good and tender you can serve them up with some simply prepared black beans and rice for killer pairing with this delicious Malbec.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
