Campo alla Sughera “Arnione” Super Tuscan 2007

The summer heat is in full force here in the Mile High City. So what better time could there be to lay into some really dense and powerful red wine, right? Seriously though, when killer deals like this one come along we just can’t help ourselves. The red wines of Bolgheri along the Tuscan coast have quickly become some of the most expensive and sought after wines in all of Italy. Unlike traditional Italian wines, those hailing from Bolgheri are typically made up of classic Bordeaux varietals. The 2007 Campo alla Sugheri “Arnione” is simply extravagant. It represents everything we love about Italian wine, Tuscan wine, and Bolgheri all at the same time by delivering raw power and intensely layered character in in a sleek and approachable package. It is juicy and ripe on the entry yet deeply complex and packed with ageworthy structure. Have a bottle soon on your next special occasion and then stash a few more bottles in the cellar so that you can delight in their evolution well into the 2020’s.
On to the Tasting Notes:
I had the pleasure of tasting a bottle of the 2007 Campo alla Sughera “Arnione” over the course of 3 days earlier this month. Let me tell you, there aren’t a whole lot of wines that continue to improve after they have been open that long. But, in my mind at least, that sort of wine is one can be really rewarding to cellar. So, despite not really “needing” any more wine I am going to grab a few bottles for myself because it’s one of those wines that I want to have in my life.

So, for fun, I decided to open another bottle of the 2007 Arnione this morning in order to have a fresh bottle to describe to you. As soon as I pulled the cork I immediately got a whiff of that unmistakable scent of a classically built Bordeaux blend. Tar, tobacco, fresh herbs, brandied cherries, damp soil, and dusty plums all made appearances as the wine slowly opened up in the glass. The palate was dense and utterly seamless. It had the sort of well composed power that I often marvel at when I taste wines at this level of quality and price. The entry was lush and refined with very nice plum and black currant flavors leading the charge. Then, as I focussed more on the mid-palate, I got blackberry liqueur, crushed black cherries, and fig paste. The finish was almost unbearably long. The wine was tannic without being aggressive and bold without being edgy. It was layered with minerals, tar, earth, oak, unsweetened cocoa, and even wilted violets. Every part of the ‘07 Arnione seemed classy, expensive, and engaging.
Food Pairing:
There is no doubt that a wine of this quality was built with food pairing in mind. When I polished off my last bottle I was out in the woods on a camping trip so I paired it up with cheeseburgers off the grill. You may, however, want to serve it with something a little more appropriate in which case you should consider grilling some of those great little bone-in lamb “lollipops”. Then make a luxurious sauce by simmering fresh cherries in ruby port until it reduces into an almost syrupy consistence. Finish the sauce with a sprinkling of fresh thyme and a couple of pats of cold butter off the heat to give it that lovely glossy sheen.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
