El Puntido Rioja 2010

El Puntido represents everything that makes Rioja great! Their wines, vintage after vintage, offer some of the most pure, the most elegant, and the most engaging examples of Spanish Tempranillo that are available in the market today. The 2010 is, without question, a young wine but boy is it going places! After only an hour in my glass the nose became thoroughly remarkable bursting with lush scents of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, incense, cigar box, and black currant jam. The palate, while showing obvious evidence of its youth, delivered explosive flavors of ripe black cherries, cassis liqueur, cedar, and anise. Yet as brash and buxom as the 2010 was, it was already showing a sense of cohesion and symmetry. It finished with a good deal of oaky richness but it was also starting to show some fine minerality as well. A 94 Point collectible like this one rarely sees a discount of 50% off the MSRP. So, despite the warmer weather, we don’t expect our limited supply to last through the weekend. Please call the shop to reserve your bottles today.
On to the Tasting Notes:
We feature plenty of awesome wine on this email, but it is a real pleasure when I get to tell you about something as well built and collectible as the 2010 El Puntido Rioja. This delicious red has all the right stuff going for it. The winery is a thoroughly modern facility with all of the best tools and techniques. Then they have access to fantastic, old-vine fruit. That’s the sort of combination that is capable of producing truly world class wine. There’s no doubt that the 2010 El Puntido is a youthful example of what the winery is producing. The abundant use of new French oak still dominates its personality to a certain extent. But I think that is has all of the attributes to mature in bottle over the next several years into something really worthy.

I poured a large tasting glass and gave it a quick check for flaws. Finding none, I left it to breathe for about an hour before beginning this review. Boy was I glad I waited because, even after an hour, the 2010 El Puntido was brash and bold on both the nose and the palate. If you’re going to drink a bottle this weekend then I’d suggest decanting it for an hour or so before hand. The nose was densely packed with sultry scents of vanilla, cocoa, and toasty oak at first. It totally reminded me of chocolate chip cookies and, while that may sound strange, it’s one of the things that I love most about wine. It has the ability to transport you to a different place and time with nothing more than a quick sniff. But I digress… The palate was rich and powerful with an abundance of blackberry, black currant, cassis, and plum flavors. It felt substantial and hearty at first but as I continued to sip it slowly through the process of writing this review I found that it softened up very nicely. When I finished this review the wine had been in my glass for a little more than 2 hours. It was showing quite a bit of cohesion and composure as well as engaging minerality on the finish that was missing from it initially. It gave me high hopes for the way that the wine would eventually evolve in the cellar. I guessed that it would hold up nicely through 2025 or thereabouts.
Food Pairing:
I love brussels sprouts that are sliced into thin ribbons and then fried in bacon fat until they’re crispy. They make a great side dish for other hearty meals. But one thing that I like to do with them is to toss them into some faro that I simmered in chicken stock. When I serve it I add the bacon that was left from sauteing the brussels sprouts and a few crumbles of aged bleu cheese. It makes a heck of a side dish and it’s even quite nice as a weeknight main dish when accompanied by a nice hunk of crusty bread. I think you’d totally love it with this delicious young Rioja.
