Matchbook Wines "Tinto Rey" 2010

With the big holiday weekend upon us we want offer you a killer bottle of deeply discounted red that is perfect for casual sipping or for pairing with burgers and brats on the grill. The 2010 Matchbook Winery Tinto Rey is a really cool California Tempranillo blend based that is as luscious and dense as you could want. It has gobs of rich, ripe fruit and plenty intriguing old world charm. The nose is awash with scents of black currants, toasty oak, cigar box, and anise. It has the sort of dark and brooding nose that invites you in for a sip. And boy, what a sip it is! The palate is generous at first. It offers up plenty of blackberry and black cherry on the entry. Then hints of blueberry jam and Marascino liqueur begin to take hold. The finish delivers food friendly notes of tar and licorice as well as a hint of pithy bitterness. It is nothing short of fantastic, with none of that cheap sticky sweet style that is all too often found in inexpensive California red blends.
On to the Tasting Notes:
There is no doubt that the California red blend category is one of the most popular in the store right now. But we’re beginning to see more and more of them with lingering sweetness, and not just ripe wines but wines that were actually sweet. This week though we have a fantastic California red blend that is wonderfully ripe and sweetly fruited but fermented all the way to dryness. After a few minutes of decanting impressive scents of cocoa, cedar, tobacco, licorice, and Chinese five spice powder waft from the glass to greet you. Once you go in for a sip you’ll be treated to an impressive array of fruit flavors ranging from ripe blackberries and black cherries to plums and blueberries. It has wonderful density on the palate but it’s not sticky or syrupy. Instead the wine shows a sort of clarity and composure that doesn’t holler, “Look at me! Look at me!”. The finish is long and plush with a cool touch of pithy bitterness that lingers after each sip and reminds you that you’re not sipping some over-extracted fruit bomb.
Food Pairing:
Since just about everyone is going to be firing up the grills this weekend we think that you’ll be in great shape if you open a bottle or three of the Tinto Rey both for casual sipping before dinner and for pairing with your burgers, steaks, and brats. But after the holiday weekend is over you’ll really want to try a bottle of it alongside a plate of cured meats and cheeses with a hunk of crusty bread. Sooner or later the weather is bound to warm up and I can’t think of a better way to spend an afternoon than sitting in a park under a shady tree picnicking with a bottle of the Tinto Rey.
