Poderi Elia "Padrun" Langhe Nebbiolo 2012

Really great Nebbiolo gets stratospherically expensive, think Barolo and Barbaresco, but this week we’re bringing it back down to earth with an exceptional buy from our friends at Small Vineyards. The 2012 Poderi Elia “Padrun” Langhe Nebbiolo displays all the classic hallmarks of this extraordinary varietal but with a much more modest pricetag. The nose is extravagantly perfumed with scents of rose petals, dried cherries, damp cedar, and sweet pipe tobacco. It is the kind of scent that somebody ought to make into one of those tree shaped air fresheners so that you could carry it with you wherever you went. The palate is similarly generous with a beautifully open texture and a wealth of rich fruit and non-fruit flavors dancing along in perfect harmony. It shows off plenty of candied red cherry, orange peel, macerated raspberries, and more as the wine touches every nook and cranny of your mouth. The finish displays fine grained tannin and just enough Old World earthy complexity to keep the wine serious. It is a thoroughly beautiful and complete Nebbiolo that should mature nicely over the next 3 years or so. With Fall right on the horizon, we couldn’t think of a more perfect wine for pairing with all of your favorite seasonal dishes.
On to the Tasting Notes:
Nebbiolo is an interesting grape. It marries the elegant aromas of Pinot Noir with the fine grained tannins of Cabernet yielding a wine that offers the opportunity to pair with a broad range of hearty meals. This particular example seems to have been built with nearer term drinking in mind. Not surprising considering Poderi Elia’s generally modern approach to winemaking. The flavors and aromas are spot on though beginning with a lovely nose of rose, cedar, espresso, and cigar box. I love aromatic reds like this one because I often find that I smell my wine more than I drink it. The palate is excellent though. It has that classic Nebbiolo tannin but I don’t find it to be disproportionate or “too young”. Instead it seems like it wants a plate of food and couple of good friends. Flavors of candied cherries and strawberries abound but there are also darker notes of tar, worn glove leather, and sun baked earth. The finish is long and generous in a way that is often not seen in Nebbiolo because the tannins can be so astringent. Overall I’d say that this is an excellent buy for drinking over the next 3 years or so.
Food Pairing:
How about some Fall flavors? I freaking love roasted butternut squash topped with toasted walnuts and dried cherries and I think a dish like that would be a fantastic pairing for this juicy Nebbiolo.
