Domaine Maby “La Fermade” Lirac Rouge 2013

Now that the summer is in full swing we know that everyone’s routines start to get a little scattered. So this week we wanted to offer a sweet deal on a really versatile red from the Cotes du Rhone region that will serve you well no matter what the occasion happens to be. 2013 was a challenging vintage in the Southern Rhone but great producers like Domaine Maby managed to pull together some really yummy wines. This Lirac Rouge combines larger than usual quantities of Syrah and Mourvedre to give the wine that great density and rough hewn character that makes Rhone reds so special. The nose offers up engaging scents of blackberry jam, tar, violets, and bacon fat. On the medium bodied palate you’ll get a wealth of ripe fruit with layers of black currants, sun baked plums, and cassis liqueur. It finishes with impressive minerality as well as notes of thyme, game, mint, anise, and even a touch of bubblegum. It’s a fantastic value in village level Cotes du Rhone and one that we believe will be a perfect summertime red.
On to the Tasting Notes:
Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, in various proportions, are staples of the winemaking world. Grenache lends bright red fruit and spice. Syrah give a luscious texture and plenty of layered character. Then Mourvedre brings hearty, earthy complexity and intensity to the blend. There are many outstanding iterations of this basic blend from far flung winegrowing regions all over the globe. This week we have a cool example of a really traditional producer, Domaine Maby, who took a challenging vintage and managed to make a really cool wine. This blend contains larger portions of Syrah and Mourvedre than we typically see in southern Rhone wines.

The result is a wine that offers a fun mix of deep, dark fruit and humble earthy complexity. I totally dig the nose. It’s a little funky and a little rustic at first but as I look more deeply into it with each passing swirl and sniff I begin to really see evidence of some cool layers. Hints of violets and Provencal herbs crop up after a moment. Then intriguing notes of anise, mint, kirsch, and berry jam all begin to make appearances. The palate is similarly styled with an initial impression of blue and black fruit that slowly fades, revealing appealing secondary notes of tar, graphite, black tea, and olive tapenade. The mouth is medium bodied and quite supple, particularly after a half hour of decanting, which should make it a perfect foil for a wide range of summertime meals and occasions.
Food Pairing:
I think that you’ll find that the 2013 Domaine Maby Lirac Rouge is a great wine to pair up with a whole host of classic summer dishes. I love serving it alongside some bleu cheese studded hamburgers. It’s also great with plate of assorted grilled veggies. I think you’ll love the way that the sweet and sappy Syrah fruit combines with the slight bitterness you get from the grill charred veg. But really, this one will be most at home when you serve it alongside a plate of cured meats, cheeses, olives, and crusty bread. Preferably outside in a shady spot...
