Chainti is ubiquitous. It’s among the most recognizable wine brands in the world. Yet, Chianti is in flux. It is not a monolith. It is evolving to meet the tastes of modern consumers. The best wineries are finding ways to make juicy, clean, accessible wines without sacrificing that picture perfect expression of the bounty of the Tuscan countryside in late summer. Tenuta Il Corno strikes right at the heart of the conversation with their vibrant 2019 Chianti. A bountiful nose of violet hard candies, late season plums, and damp forest floor gives way to a fresh and friendly palate that instantly makes me yearn for a simple meal served in my courtyard surrounded by a small group of friends with the fire pit lazily glowing and the Red wine flowing! Crushed raspberries and pomegranate seeds are tinged with delicate hints of Moro orange, rubbed thyme, and sandstone rich soil in a way that makes the fruit and the earth seem inextricably linked. The finish is smooth but youthful and lively. If a more perfect Red existed for pairing with pizza, pasta, or a big ole antipasto plate then I have not had the good fortune to run across it. Serve this fresh young Chainti with a very light chill on it and watch the warm evening melt away into night right before your eyes.
Food Pairing:
Young Chianti is remarkably good food pairing wine. Fresh, zesty fruit and a long, dry finish create ideal conditions for pleasurable sipping alongside virtually anything that offers a bit of luscious fat. I love to serve it with lightly steamed asparagus that I wrapped in prosciutto and seared under the broiler. Of all things, it is magic with a really simply prepared 3 egg omelette served with an unencumbered salad of bitter greens and lightly tossed with a homemade citrus and herb vinaigrette.
