Gnarly old bush vine Grenache is one of the great treasures of the wine world and there is no place with more of those wonderful, ancient vines than McLaren Vale in Australia. This week we have a truly special treat for you. The 93+ Point 2010 Clarendon Hills Hickinbotham Vineyard Grenache is well on the path to maturity at 9 years old with a stunning bouquet of cherry pie cooling on the window sill, mid-summer violets, toasted graham cracker, sassafras, and clove. Every swirl and subsequent sniff affords the drinker a more complete view into the soul of the Hickinbotham Vineyard during the summer of 2010. And that’s just the nose! The palate joyfully delivers on the promises made by the nose as wave after wave of strawberry jam, crushed raspberries, and Ceylon cinnamon come blustering along like waves crashing against rocky coastline during a squall. The finish is picture perfect Grenache with gentle kisses of Oolong tea and iron rich soil continuing to deliver pleasure even as the impressive array of peppery spice notes slowly recedes in between sips. The 2010 Hickinbotham Grenache is contemplative wine, no doubt, and yet it is imbued with the kind of raw power that refuses to go unnoticed. It’s intensity does not come at the expense of symmetry though, making it a fine candidate for up to 5 more years in the cellar where it ought to continue unabated on its heretofore outstanding evolutionary track. tldr; Buy this one, folks! It’s special!

It may sound a little silly to pair high end, aged, 93+ Point Grenache with pizza but darn it, this is THE pizza wine of the year! Whether you’re a staunch Caputto 00 supporter or you have a place that you love for takeout you are going to do freaking backflips when you have this brilliant Red with a piece of perfectly prepared pie!
