Just prior to the past holiday season we were fortunate to discover the Marchetti Castro di San Silvestro Montepulciano and Sangiovese blend from our friends at Small Vineyards and we sold a ton of cases! We were lucky enough to get one more drop of this beauty this past week to give you one more shot at this gem. The entire staff here at Mile High has been enamored with this wine and we feel that it is one of the best $10 bottles in the entire store! Plump and juicy, the 2016 Marchetti Castro di San Silvestro delivers the kind of super drinkable style that is sure to please a wide range of different tastes. The nose kicks things off in high style with a wonderful mix roast plums, potpourri, cedar, rose petals, and a touch of pipe tobacco. It is the kind of expressive nose that you never find in such inexpensive wine with each swirl and sniff offering even deeper levels of interest and complexity. The palate follows suit with a thoroughly ripe entry replete with layers of cocktail cherries, black currant liqueur, and crushed blackberries. As the wine moves onto the finish firm tannins begin to make an impact, serving to dry out some of that great fruit from the entry. Lingering hints of cocoa, anise, and tar slowly give way to black olive and loamy soil making this Red feel utterly complete and surprisingly serious considering its modest price. This delicious effort will make a perfect hostess gift for your next party but it will also pair up admirably with a wide range of hearty, cool weather meals at home.
Food Pairing:
Montepulciano is among the most versatile Red wines in the world. This particular example, with 10% of Sangiovese added for levity and structure, is sure to please in a wide variety of contexts. Drink it alone as a nice rich wintertime cocktail. Or put it alongside a garam masala infused sautee of cubed butternut squash, whole button mushrooms, diced shallots, and haricot verts topped with toasted walnuts and crumbled bacon for a simple but satisfying one pot supper.
