Nassos Priorat 2014

The warm, dry climate of the Priorat region in Spain provides picture perfect growing conditions for Garnacha. This week we have an outstanding example of old vine, dry farmed, Garnacha from one of our all time favorite Spanish winemakers, Javier Rodriguez. This sumptuous Red will wow you with it’s exotic spice, lush red berry fruit, and exceptionally persistent minerality. The wine deftly bridges the gap between delicate and bold by offering a lovely nose perfumed with hints of rose and crushed cherries interspersed with layers of allspice, thyme, and sun baked earth. On the palate, the wine feels buoyant and alive as it delivers abundant flavors of raspberry puree, red currants, and kirsch liqueur. This is classic Priorat Garnacha and it offers a pure and unadulterated view into the finest this ancient winegrowing region is capable of! Elegantly structured, supple, and yet full of enthusiasm, it will provide the kind of layered and evolving drinking experience that is sure to strike a chord with anyone who loves Old World Reds. Grab this gem before it’s gone and drink it over the next 3 or 4 years.
Food Pairing:
Great Spanish Garnacha like this week’s “Wine of the Week”, the 2015 Nassos Priorat, is so darn good to drink. I think you’ll find that it pairs up really well with tons of different foods. For me, it would be most at home as the star of the show by pairing it with a plate of cured meats and cheeses. But I think you’d find that it was an excellent foil for homemade pizzas, grilled sausage and peppers, or even a hearty seafood dish like a cioppino. This really is one of those wines that you’re going to find yourself reaching for over and over again because it is so darn good to drink.
