Drinking Girard’s 2014 Napa Cabernet is like seeing an old friend that you haven’t caught up with in a while. Vintage after vintage, Girard’s Cabernet performs at the top of it’s class by delivering a luxurious example of premium Napa style at a price point that isn’t driven by an outrageous mortgage or an even more outrageous ego. This thought provoking red begins with glorious scents of pipe tobacco, melted dark chocolate, fresh picked thyme, and Grandma’s cherry preserves simmering on the stove. It has the kind of nose that you want to wrap yourself up in like a warm blanket. And speaking of warm blankets, the palate is velvety smooth and oh-so layered. Bountiful mid-summer berries come through instantly when the wine touches your tongue. Cherries, raspberries, blueberries, and plums give the entry a sense of presence and then, on the finish, the wine turns darker and even more complex as it delivers lingering hints of vanilla, toasty oak, allspice, and Ceylon cinnamon. Dad isn’t all that difficult to please. Skip the socks and ties this Father’s Day and get him a bottle of killer Napa Cabernet and a really nice steak because, deep down, that’s what he really wants!
Food Pairing:
Girard’s 2014 Napa Cabernet is delicious. Like really freaking good. So, you shouldn’t have to try too hard to find a great pairing for it. In my mind, at least, a killer pairing would consist of a nice piece of beef tenderloin seasoned simply with salt and pepper then seared in a good hot cast iron skillet before being served with a drizzle of thyme infused brown butter and a big ole baked potato. Simply and spectacular!
