If there is a more yummy and versatile red table wine than Cotes du Rhone then we haven’t heard of it. The classic Rhone combination of Grenache and Syrah creates such an appealing interplay of aromas and flavors that winemakers the world over have endeavored to emulate it. But the homeland of Grenache and Syrah is till the Rhone Valley. This week we have a juicy, generous, and playful example of Cotes du Rhone from one of our favorite producers, Domaine le Renard. In classic Bistro Red fashion this medium bodied effort begins with engaging hints of cocoa dusted plums, bruised violets, and the brambly understory of a wild raspberry patch. That fresh and generous style continues on the palate with exuberant flavors of crushed raspberries and strawberries macerated in brandy and sugar taking center stage. The finish is smooth and round with lifted notes of kirsch liqueur and candied orange zest lingering for quite a while in between sips. It’s true, this is probably not the wine you’ll want to serve when you meet your soon-to-be in-laws for the first time. But if you want something delicious to open for no reason at all, other than having a hankering for a good glass of red, then you’ve got to consider this solid Cotes du Rhone value from Le Renard.
Food Pairing:
A fresh little Rhone red like the 2014 Le Renard will pair up with darn near anything. It’s ripe enough for hearty meals like the Julia’s classic Boeuf Bourguignon but it is lively enough to pair up with a side of grilled salmon or even just a plate of warm brie and fresh fruit. There are lots of evenings when I want nothing more than a hunk of crusty bread, a nibble of cheese, and a good glass of red and that’s where the 2014 Le Renard will fit in for me. It’s right as rain!
