Hindsight Estate Calistoga Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Socks and ties just won’t cut it these days so treat Dad right on this Father’s Day weekend and pick him up a stupid good bottle of estate grown Napa Cabernet. The exceptional quality of the 2012 Napa vintage is on display in this tremendous bottling from the good folks at Hindsight. Pour a glass of this beautiful red and you’ll immediately see evidence of quality even before you go in for that first sip. The color is inky and saturated with the most beautiful core of deep dark violet color and matching tears that gently drip down the sides of the glass as you swirl the wine around. Hearty scents of cigar box, tar, and damp forest floor are the kind of heady perfume that is sure to quicken your pulse as you prepare for that first sip. And then, when you do have a taste, the wine is both bursting with fruit and surprisingly composed. Layers of sun baked plums, pithy blackberries and black currants macerated in brandy get things rolling. Then seductive layers of vanilla, cedar, and kirsch liqueur begin to take hold before the wine gently drifts out of focus after the long, plush finish. It is an outstanding choice for steaks on the grill this weekend, but this is one that you will want to come back to over the years so we suggest grabbing a couple of bottles to lay down so that you can delight in their evolution over the next 5 to 7 years.
On to the Tasting Notes:
The majority of my personal cellar is devoted to European wine. It’s my happy place. But I have to tell you that I picked up a 6 pack of the 2012 Hindsight Cab to add to my collection because I simply couldn’t resist its charms. In many cases I find the affordable Napa Cabernets that I taste to be obsequious. They’re so generously fruited and so richly textured that they don’t appear to have any sincerity or layered complexity. I had one at the house a couple of weeks ago that was so dense it tasted like ruby port, and this was well over a hundred bucks a bottle. But the Hindsight Calistoga Cab seems to avoid that trap by offering a nicely integrated frame of tannin and acidity to hang all that luscious 2012 Napa fruit from. I love the layers of dark, non-fruit character that it offers up at first. Hints of tar and tobacco meld with damp cedar and decomposing leaf litter. Then, on the palate, I really like the way that it opens right up and gives up flavors of ripe plums, brandied cherries, blackberry jam, and bittersweet black currants. As it glides through the finish, I do start to notice some nicely integrated tannin as well as layers of vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso, and mineral. In my estimation it will drink nicely over the course of the next 5 to 7 years if not a bit longer. It is, by no means, emulating the European model of winemaking, but it is very well built and delivers a symmetrical, albeit intense, presentation that I believe will be very pleasurable to sip alongside hearty meals for a good long while.
Food Pairing:
Dad’s love their toys for sure. I mean really, we’re all just big kids at heart, right? But if your Father’s Day budget doesn’t have space for boats, bikes, or snowmobiles then why not set Dad up with a really nice evening instead? Get some really good steaks, a fantastic bottle of red, and then kick back and let the warm evening drift slowly on into the night.
