Riccardo Baracchi - Smeriglio Super Tuscan Merlot 2012

With the big Valentine's Weekend on the horizon we thought that this would be a great time to introduce you to one of our new favorite Super Tuscan reds, the 2012 Baracchi Merlot. This luscious, full bodied wine is just begging to be paired up with a perfectly prepared piece of filet mignon. Dark and brooding in the glass, it offers an alluring perfume of espresso and dark chocolate tinged with hints of vanilla, pipe tobacco, and stewed berries. As the wine swirls around in your glass you’ll be entranced by it’s sultry aroma and lovely color. Once you go in for a sip you’ll find that this 92 point showstopper is powerfully structured and packed with flavor. Lush notes of ripe black plums mingle with blackberry jam and bittersweet cocoa on the entry. The finish is eternal. Long lingering flavors of graham cracker pie crust, mineral laden soil, and French cassis liqueur take hold when you swallow and seem never to give up. If you have a splash of this one left over after your meal then try pairing it up with a flourless chocolate torte or even a simple dark chocolate truffle. Drink this beauty over the next 5 or so years and delight in its evolution.
On to the Tasting Notes:
Tuscany is famous for producing some of the best grapes in the world. Sangiovese is king in Tuscany, no doubt, but the climate is so darn good that the farmers there are able to successfully produce world class wines using Bordeaux varietals. This week’s special is from a modern winery called Baracchi. Made entirely of Merlot, this dynamic Super Tuscan is built like the finest Pomerol and has the critical acclaim to back it up. Lovely scents of cold espresso and dark chocolate immediately inform you that you’re about to have a sip of a great glass of Merlot. Elegant floral aromas follow those darker notes up and, if that’s not enough complexity for you, you’ll also get hints of vanilla and toasty oak as well. The palate is hearty and shows some firm but well integrated tannic structure which does an admirable job of framing all the luscious fruit that this delicious red delivers. I got plenty of plum, blackberry, blueberry, and cassis on the entry. Then, on the finish, I found plenty of mineral, toast, blackberry liqueur, and graham cracker. A food wine, no doubt, the Baracchi is also one that should age nicely for the next 3 to 5 years and possibly even a bit longer though it is so yummy now that it may not be necessary to delay gratification.
Food Pairing:
A hearty Tuscan Red like this week’s special deserves to be paired with a hearty meal. Why not grab a really nice steak and sear it off in cast iron before finishing it in the oven? Maybe do a side of herb roasted new potatoes and some grilled asparagus too? Add a hunk of crusty bread and a chocolate truffle for dessert and you’ll think you’ve hit the lottery.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
This price expires 2/14/2016 at 6pm and is limited to in-store quantities.
