Uncastellum Tinto Barrica Organic Red 2009

Now that the Beer Fest has wrapped up we’re bringing you back to your regularly scheduled “Wine of the Week” email special. This week we have a fantastic certified organic red from a Spanish producer that we’ve been in love with for years, Uncastellum. The 2009 Tinto Barrica combines the best elements of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet, and Merlot to create a wonderfully polished, aged red. The nose starts off with hints of cedar, raspberry jelly, and fresh rose petals. It is a beautiful nose with elegant layers in a humble and understated package. The palate is plush and generous with sleek notes of blueberries and blackberries on the entry. The mid-palate is smooth and composed with no hard edges to be found. Yet the finish manages to display really well integrated tannin and lively acidity which serves to ensure that the Tinto Barrica feels like a serious wine and not just a Tuesday night quaffer. Lingering minerality and delicate hints of vanilla, cocoa, and earth all drift lazily into and out of focus on the long, clean finish. This 2009 is really showing well today, and yet it is so nicely balanced that it will undoubtedly hold up well in the cellar for up to 5 more years.
On to the Tasting Notes:
We’ve had a number of wines from Uncastellum over the years. They never fail to impress, delivering plenty of ripe fruit and classic old-vine minerality without becoming either sticky and sweet or tart and austere. The 2009 Tinto Barrica represents another splendid effort on their part. An hour or so of decanting reveals a nose that is so pleasing and so layered that you’ll just want to sit back and sniff it again and again. I got a range of appealing scents that began with nice ripe blueberries and plum then slowly evolved into cedar, vanilla, cola, and rose petals. It was a sexy nose, no doubt, and one that I just wanted to kick back and relax with. But, for your benefit, I decided to press on and have a nice big sip. The results were instant. I had a sip and then a big smile came over my face. The palate was picture perfect for a 6 year old red. Evolved tannins provided a generous frame for lovely notes of blueberry jam, watermelon liqueur, and ripe red cherries. It popped with fruit and yet it wasn’t really fruity. That was what really began to set it apart. The finish was plush and refined but it wasn’t light and wimpy. Instead it slowly faded from view, leaving in its wake notes of vanilla, espresso, crushed granite, and bittersweet cocoa.
Food Pairing:
A wine like this week’s special, the 2009 Uncastellum Tinto Barrica, deserves to be treated graciously. Pairing it with food isn’t a must since it is so symmetrical and pleasant but it’s still a very good idea. I think it would be a fantastic fit for a hearty late summer paella with sausage and seafood. If paella is too involved though, it would also be wonderful when placed alongside a plate of high quality cured meats, aged cheeses, olives, and crusty bread.
You MUST mention this special or print it out to receive the price on the above wine.
