Kunde Family Estate Sonoma Valley Zinfandel 2012

If you’ve been reading this email for a while then you have undoubtedly heard our praise for the Kunde Zinfandel. Well, a few weeks ago we transitioned into the new 2012 vintage. Now that we feel like the wine is rested and ready to roll we wanted to take this opportunity to tell you just how darned good it is! As soon as you pull the cork the 2012 Kunde Zin puts the pedal to the metal and doesn’t let up. The nose bursts with classic Zin aromas of sweet violets, underbrush, vanilla, toasty oak, and plenty of ripe red berry fruit. The first sip is money! It explodes onto your palate with the sort of unabashed style that is impossible to ignore. Fantastic flavors of ripe red cherries, kirsch liqueur, and sweet blackberries ride high. Then, as the sensation of all that buxom fruit fades, satisfying notes of rose petals, rhubarb, cinnamon, and candied ginger pick right up without a moment’s pause. We’ve all been patiently waiting for the weather to cool off this Fall because we know that it won’t be long before the snow starts falling. So come on by on this beautiful weekend and stock up on a killer bottle that is sure to warm you up on a chilly night.
On to the Tasting Notes:
You all have heard me say it time and time again. But I’ll say it again anyway. I sure do love some California Zinfandel! I honestly have no idea why we are able to continue to offer you such a fantastic deal on the Kunde Zinfandel considering that this exact same wine is available right now on the winery’s own website for ten bucks more than you can get it today for at Mile High. I’m not one to look too deeply into such matters though because I know that, in this business, you have to seize the moment and grab the good stuff while you can get it.

The 2012 Kunde Family Estate Sonoma Valley Zinfandel tastes like California Zinfandel should. It is untamed and brash with plenty of fruit, spice, and alcohol. I lust after elegant aged Burgundy and Bordeaux just as much as the next sommelier, but I have to tell you that this Kunde Zin is so yummy that when it’s in my glass I’m totally content. The nose is so wonderfully aromatic that it makes me want to dab a little of it behind my ears so that I can wear it like perfume. I wish they made car air fresheners in this scent so that I could take it with me wherever I went. The alluring scent of toasty oak caresses aromas of wilted violets, sweet tobacco, Nag Champa, and freshly baked butterscotch cookies. Ever sniff reveals more and more layered complexity. Then the first sip serves to reinforce the theme with explosive flavors of ripe cherries, blackberry jam, cassis, and boysenberry syrup. The finish is velvety at first with the fruit slowly building to a crescendo then gently drifting back like a wave crashing into a rocky shoreline. In its wake notes of allspice, Ceylon cinnamon, and tamarind paste seem to linger on into eternity. It is another one of those bottles that I won’t be able to stop from buying for myself despite the fact that I have no excuse for buying any more wine. It’s just so darned good that I don’t think I want to be without it this winter.
Food Pairing:
Sip this beauty all by itself if you are in the mood for a big brash cocktail wine on a chilly Fall evening. Or try it out with a hearty bowl of red chili if you feel like doing something a bit different. Finally there’s the classic pairing of Zinfandel and barbeque baby back pork ribs. Regardless, you’re going to love this stuff!
