Franco Boasso’s wines have graced our holiday tables and borne witness to so many memorable events with our family and friends. What a pleasure it is to be able to tell you about the newest vintage of his flagship Barbera d’Alba Superiore! This dynamic Red begins with a wonderful nose of rose petals, pipe tobacco, Tahitian vanilla, and fresh baked sugar cookies still warm from the oven. It is the sort of alluring nose that is sure to pull you in for a sip. And what a sip it is! The fruit is like an exclamation point, amplifying every word of the sentence with its presence. Vibrant flavors of blueberry jam and Luxardo cherries work like a skilled gymnast on the bars applying all of that power in a way that makes it look so effortless and graceful. Fully ripe at 15% alcohol and, yet, the wine never feels heavy or hot. Instead it is pure and balanced and oh-so right. Fans of modern, New World Reds will love the impact that the 2017 Barbera d’Alba Superiore has on the palate. Lovers of the Old World classics won’t be left out because this vintage is true to its heritage, displaying the kind of deeply complex minerality and spice that only old vines grown in rocky soils are capable of producing. Drink this beauty on Thanksgiving this year and for the next 3 or 4 Thanksgivings thereafter because it is evolving flawlessly.
Food Pairing:
Barbera is among the most versatile European table wines. When you are as good at making Barbera as Franco Boasso then the sky’s the limit in terms of food pairing. That said, we picked this Barbera this week because we feel like it is a picture perfect Red for Thanksgiving. It is sure to impress everyone at the table without ever running the risk of upstaging your lovingly prepared bird and sides.
