If you’re one of those folks who switches over to whites and roses during the warmer months then you can stop reading now because this week’s email special is a big, brash, bruising Red! The 2016 Bodegas Triton Tinta de Toro Tempranillo clocks in at 15% alcohol and packs a real punch on the palate. Young Toro always seems to have a meaty, aggressive way about it and you can be sure that the 92 Point Triton is true to type beginning with a nose of cocoa powder, cigar box, and sun baked plums. A quick sip reveals a buxom palate with sanguine layers of blackberry and black currant set atop cedar, crushed pepper, graphite, and toast. Sweet tannin encircles everything providing the kind of structure necessary to hang all that ripe, black fruit flavor on. What’s more is that this wine, in spite of its intensity, manages to deliver a sense of freshness on the finish that keeps it from becoming monolithic or sticky. Gosh it’s good! Please swing by the tasting bar this evening to try it for free. We think it is as compelling a wine as we’ve seen in quite a while.
Food Pairing:
Like I said before, this wine isn’t light. But, because it has balanced acidity, it will make a great pairing wine for a winder range of meals than most young Toro. As such, I suggest trying it out with barbeque chicken thighs. I love some slow cooked, sauce glazed, smoky chicken thighs! And I especially love pairing them up with a hearty Red. Try some out at your house this weekend and have a glass of this silly good Tempranillo with them. Your mouth will thank you!
