The wines of France’s Southern Rhone valley are some of the most interesting, versatile, and drinkable in the world. Further, they represent some of the best values in premium Reds that you’ll find anywhere. This week we have the new 2016 vintage of Madrigal, Domaine Coste Chaude’s Cotes du Rhone Villages from Visan. This wine is freaking good. Like, silly good! It showcases everything that the critics love about the 2016 vintage displaying an exceptional balance between opulently ripe fruit, classic peppery spice, and all that wonderfully layered earthy complexity that makes the Rhone such a special place. Perfumed scents of violets and freshly pitted cherries are gently laid atop a perfectly refined palate of black plum, blueberry jam, and cherry cordial. The finish is a study in classic Rhone style with long-lingering notes of crushed peppercorns, bouquet garni, and limestone rich soil. This is what makes the 2016 vintage so special. It nailed the sweet spot between ripe fruit and bright acidity. You get all that killer cherry and blueberry but it doesn’t come at the expense of the earthy finish that delivers the kind of Old World character that we wine connoisseurs crave. If you like Cotes du Rhone then you need to stock up on the Madrigal this weekend because this juice is right on point!
